Concrete: Introduction Things have changed a great deal since the Romans first made concrete: cement has been manufactured industrially since the nineteenth century and reinforcement and prestressing have revolutionized construction.
Cement and lime The word cement comes from the latin Caementum, meaning natural stone. It is the basic ingredient of the most used construction material, concrete.
First the Egyptians then the Romans used natural mortars to join the stones in their contructions. As a result of the discovery made by Louis Vicat in 1817 we know how to produce cement industrially from natural materials such as clay and limestone.
