A century after electrification of the Paris-Issy-La Plaine line (the first electrified line) France has more than 14,000 km of electrified lines.

For technical reasons, the first electrified lines had a 1,500 volt DC supply. The adventof power electronics and new motors in the 1970s made a three phase 25kV supply possible. France’s present-day network has more than 5,800km of 1,500 V DC track and 8,200km of 25 kV AC track.
