Fortified castles and remparts up to the 19th Century, the fortifications in the Vauban, 19th century forts, the Maginot line etc; there were countless numbers and types of defensive structures built over the centuries and then demolished when they had outlived their usefulness, due to increased power of armaments.
These sometimes had to be carried out under enemy fire, thus including the element of danger to the technical difficulties involved in the execution of these works.
There are many traces left in our countryside where numerous battles took place.
Amongst the latest major projects of this type are the rocket silos of the Albion plateau, the military air bases and the underground facilties of Bizerte, Brest or of Taverny.
