People and goods have always needed to travel from one valley to another or reach isolated human settlements that are either in the bottom of valleys or on mountain sides. Mountain transport systems have always been the way of meeting this need and remain so. Of course, animals of various types have been used for mountain transport, but we shall limit ourselves here to systems devised by man to carry people and goods over valleys or rivers or any other type of natural obstacle that cannot be crossed by other means.
