Roads are an important sector of activity that provides a large number of jobs.

Directly and indirectly, the roads employ more than 2.5 million people in France. The automobile industry dominates with almost 800,000 jobs. This sector includes all the jobs associated with the manufacture of motor vehicles and vehicle accessories both for production (320,000 jobs) and raw materials and services (475,000 jobs), for example in the production of metal, electronics, glass, paint, tyres and plastic.

The road-related service sector (sales, repair, insurance, fuel, driving schools, etc.) provides more than 590,000 jobs.

Road hauliers and ancillary services (police, health, etc.) account for 1,100,000 jobs.
Last, road construction and maintenance employ approximately 100,000 persons. Road construction firms take on about 6,000 young persons every year who they help to train them either within the company or via block release training.
