Our environment requires considerable and continual works to be carried out in order to establish, and then maintain on a permanent basis, pleasing and tolerable living conditions for mankind:
the securing of territory whilst protecting, as much as is possible, people and goods against risks and catastrophes, the elimination of solid and liquid residues, maintenance of functional and landscaping features of human structures, improvement of the countryside in order to re-shape urban parks and old slag heaps and create recreational areas, (...)
The development of sports and leisure activities in the last few decades has led to the construction of specific projects.
Some examples of specific projects are :
Athletes, who achieve better and better results, require highly advanced equipment in order to exercise their disciplines and the public must be able to admire them in action. This therefore means that stadia, swimming pools etc must be constructed and equipped with stands.
Young people, and the not-so-young, even though they do not reach the same heights, want to be able to carry out their sports activities in pleasant (...)

So many different projects have been executed during the last two centuries in order to create works for the production, transportation and storage of the different forms of power we utilise on a daily basis,using the imagination and expertise of the teams.

Apart from the numerous public works projects described in the different areas of activity mentioned, there are others which are more difficult to assemble.....
Under this heading we have gathered together, in particular,
fortifications and military projects, industrial facilities where public works projects are the indispensable medium required, buildings where the dimensions or exceptional features mean that they are more public works projects than buildings.

Travel and Transport

Transportation networks have multiplied and serve both for the movement of people and for merchandise (freight).
Roads, railways, canals, ports and airports are the different and essential components which serve to fulfill the diversity of needs and vehicles utilised.
The development of these networks over the course of tens of years has considerably reduced the cost and duration of travel and transportation. A significant improvement in mobility and trade has ensued as a result.

Water is essential to life. So much work has been done over the ages in order to make it accessible to everybody. Many projects have been carried out to store and distribute it and to render it suitable for consumption. Some is destined to be used as a driving force or for irrigation and for evacuation purposes, in some cases after having previously been purified.
