As their designation clearly indicates, airfields with special characteristics are airfields where their designation does not justify (reception of helicopters only) or where the location does not permit (mountainous regions or lakes) the normal characteristics required for an airfield to be imposed on them.

According to regulations, airfields with normal characteristics are the only ones able to receive aeroplanes. In order that areas receiving other aircraft may be classed as airfields, the category of airfields with special characteristics was created, with all the duties resulting from their operation.

They may thus receive other aircraft which do not strictly need to land or take off from an airfield, with the stipulation of certain regulated conditions (especially mountain rescue or the use of a private stretch of water)
