More than a billion tonnes of steel a year are currently produced throughout the world, and this demonstrates the international scale of the enormous and continually increasing demand for steel.
In actual fact steel provides the basis for entire sections of the world economy from the packing sector to the automotive and aircraft industry, as well as numerous specialist metallurgical industries, including also, of course, the public works sector (where consumption of steel in Europe represents around 20% of gross steel consumption for the European Union).
