For the 1900 Universal Exhibition, a railway line was opened between Champ de Mars station (on the Grenelle side) on the left bank of the Seine and Courcelles station on the right bank (on the Passy side). A metal bridge between the two sides of the river was built between 1897 and 1900. After the exhibition the line continued in use, but from 1924 until 1936 only for freight. Afterwards, the railway line was closed to traffic, and the bridge left unused.

In 1983 the French National Railway Company (SNCF) decided to re-use the line for passenger services, and it is now part of line C on the Rapid Suburban network (RER). Large-scale works were carried out in 1984 and 1985, in particular to renovate the metal arches.

The bridge is in several sections consisting of alternating masonry and metal structures.
