The Millau Viaduct is an extremely complex structure, not only because of technical factors related to its size, height and length but also because of many others:
- the selected route had to avoid damaging the natural site and landscapes,
- its architecture,
- the structure had to respect the environment (water, noise, air, waste, etc.),
- impacts on local economic development,
- safety (during construction and later the safety of users),
- user comfort,
- the operation and maintenance of the structure.
