Pavement materials must have certain properties to provide road users with optimum comfort and safety.

The type and level of the performance that is required depend on the stresses the pavement is subjected to from the climate and heavy vehicle traffic.

In order to ensure satisfactory laying, the mix must be workable, homogeneous and without segregation.

The in-service characteristics of the pavement depend on the different layers that form the structure of the pavement.

The desired properties for mixes are impermeability, roughness, resistance to permanent deformation, a long service life and resistance to water.
