Laying a bituminous mix
(USIRF)
The laying technique to be used is decided on the basis of the daily tonnage of mix to be laid:
- on a motorway when two lanes are laid simultaneously, a single machine (a paver) is used, generally with a high rate continuous feeder
- in the case of overlays, when the road is not closed to traffic a less powerful machine is generally used that operates on half the carriageway at a time
- a paver with a telescopic screed is used for construction or maintenance works when the laying width is variable.
Laying involves spreading the mix in a layer of constant predetermined thickness and then compacting it.
