The 11 June 1909, Provence (Lambesc) earthquake is the strongest instrumental seismic event recorded in French history. It destroyed several villages between Aix-en-Provence and Salon-de-Provence and caused 46 deaths, a rather high death toll for such a sparsely populated region at this time. The 100 anniversary of this dramatic, though rare, event provides the opportunity to organize a conference on the “seismic risk assessment in regions of moderate seismicity”.
